Safety & Health

Safety Spotlight

A safe, healthy workplace is everyone's responsibility. Think Safe. Act Safe. Be Safe.

SunCoke Energy believes that most accidents are completely preventable, and the best prevention comes from our employees. For all projects these fundamental Health, Environmental and Safety Program elements are mandatory requirements:

  • Demonstrate management commitment by providing our staff, contractors, project participants and visitors a safe and healthful work environment.
  • Measure Health, Environmental and Safety performance and track continuous improvement, including first aid and near miss trending.
  • Recognize superior Health, Environmental and Safety performance.
  • Investigate all incidents to prevent reoccurrence and fully determine root cause.
  • Promote Health, Environmental and Safety both on and “off-the-job”.

Awards and Recognitions

“Sentinels of Safety” - Co-sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the Sentinels of Safety award is presented annually to those mines with the best safety records in the country. Winners are those mines that have worked the most employee-hours without experiencing a lost-time injury.

SunCoke Energy’s Dominion No. 36 was awarded the “Sentinels of Safety” trophy and Certificate of Achievement in Safety for the Large Underground Coal Group in 2009. We congratulate each employee who participated in the exemplary group achievement.
